In January of 1978, the Spring Lake Chamber of Commerce announced an initiative to sponsor a student contest for the establishment of a town flag and motto. Seeing this as an opportunity to spark interest in the local government and to get the youth in the area involved, drawings and slogans would be submitted and judged by the Chamber and the Board of Alderman. The contest generated much excitement throughout the town, getting a bunch of people involved. The Chamber faced a great challenge in choosing the motto and flag that would capture the town's spirit and hopes for the future.
In June of the same year, three student submissions were combined to create a motto and flag that would be presented to the Board. An instant hit, the motto "Unity for Prosperity" was chosen for Spring Lake! Still used today, the town flag and motto are a testament to local pride and the continued commitment for the pursuit of prosperity of all those who live in the area.
